LICELLA'S STORY

Pioneering sustainable transformation, since 2007

Licella was founded in 2007 on the principle of transformation and a shared vision for a lower carbon future, by two lifelong low carbon innovators – Dr Len Humphreys, our Executive Chairman, and Professor Thomas Maschmeyer AO, from the University of Sydney.

Frustrated by the conventional methods of converting biomass to renewable oil, like pyrolysis and gasification, which involve the challenge of removing water from feedstocks, the pair embarked on a journey of technological discovery that led to a world-changing innovation.



CAT HTR™

Embracing water as the agent of change

The idea was simple – use the water already present in feedstocks to power the sustainable transformation to renewable oil (our bio-intermediate), through a process known as hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL). This idea led to the invention of the Cat-HTR™ platform, the world’s leading HTL technology.

Cat-HTR™ opened a brand new, more sustainable and efficient pathway to produce biofuels and biochemicals, enabling the conversion of biomass waste and residue feedstocks that other technologies can’t process. A truly transformative low carbon solution, inspired and driven by nature itself.

2007

Licella founded

Founded by Cat-HTRTM co-inventors Dr Len Humphreys, Executive Chairman, and Professor Thomas Maschmeyer AO, of the University of Sydney.

Small Pilot Plant commissioned

1st generation Cat-HTRTM pilot plant commissioned in Somersby, NSW.

2011

Large Pilot Plant commissioned

Technology scale-up with 2nd generation Cat-HTRTM pilot plant commissioned in Somersby, NSW.

2012

Technology scale up

Upgrade to large pilot plant with 3rd generation Cat-HTRTM platform – Somersby, NSW.

2016

JV with Canfor Pulp

Strategic joint venture established to develop biofuels from forestry residues.

2018

Mura formed

Global joint venture established to commercialise Cat-HTRTM for advanced recycling of plastic (excluding ANZ).

2019

Pilot Plant upgrade

Distillation column commissioned with support of Australian government grant.

2020

CS1 commissioned

Commercial Stage 1 (CS1) commissioned as small-scale commercial Cat-HTR™  facility, operated in short runs for process development  in Somersby NSW.

Arbios Biotech formed

New expanded JV with Canfor formed for biofuels from agricultural and forestry residues, supported by CS1.

Mura begins construction of ReNew ELP facility

First advanced plastic recycling plant with Cat-HTR™ at its core begins construction in Wilton, UK.

2021

Arbios announce FID for CS2

Commercial Stage 2 (CS2) is the first full-scale commercial Cat-HTR™ biomass to biofuel plant in Prince George, BC,  Canada.

CS2 is named Chuntoh Ghuna by Lheidli T’enneh Nation

In 2022, the Arbios Chuntoh Ghuna facility in Prince George was given its name by the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation on whose unceded territory the facility is located.

KitKat pilot a world first

First post-consumer recycled plastic packaging created commercially using Cat-HTR™ for Nestlé in Australia.

Mura partnerships support global expansion

Mura announces investment from Dow and KBR, plus partnerships with Chevron Phillips, Mitsubishi Chemical and LG Chem

2023

Mura ReNew ELP facility

Commissioning commences of first advanced plastic recycling plant with Cat-HTR™ at core of Mura’s Hydro-PRT process – Wilton, UK.

Government supports technology development for SAF

2024

CS2 commissioning

Arbios’ Chuntoh Ghuna (CS2) biomass to biofuels Cat-HTR™ plant commences commissioning in Prince George, BC, Canada.

Shell C&T partnership

Global collaboration announced between Licella and Shell Catalyst and Technologies to develop integrated low-carbon, biomass-to-biofuels commercial solution, with strong focus on SAF.

2025

Project Swift

Licella commence detailed feasibility for first Cat-HTR™ SAF focused biorefinery, supported by ARENA $8m grant in Queensland, Australia.

CS2 construction complete

Arbios’ Chuntoh Ghuna (CS2)  Cat-HTR™ plant is construction complete, with operations scheduled to ramp up over 2025 – Prince Geroge, BC, Canada. CS2 is the world’s largest hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) facility.

About the artwork

“At the center of this painting sits a circular meeting place motif, with two smaller ones to its left and right. The way they are linked signifies a journey. The central motif is painted to represent water—specifically, the way a body of water ripples outward when a single drop falls into it.

A single drop may seem insignificant, but it only takes one drop to affect all the water around it. That’s all it takes.

I’ve used this as a metaphor, likening it to people. Many say, “I’m only one person! What difference could I possibly make?” But it only takes one person to start change. Every single person has the power to do that.”

About the artist

Garry is a proud Aboriginal man of Dharawal, Bidjigal and Dhungutti descent. His artistic style is a more modern take on traditional Aboriginal art, steering away from the common dreamtime stories and focusing on his own personal journey, experiences and social issues that pushes a lot of creative boundaries as he stretches the limits of what Aboriginal art can be.

Licella has committed to a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), endorsed by Reconciliation Australia, so that it has an actionable roadmap to improve relationships, respect, and reconciliation in our workplace and throughout all our commercial and community connections.
