Canfor Pulp awarded major grant towards joint venture

Canfor Pulp awarded major Canadian federal government cleantech grant towards developing the integration of the Licella Cat-HTR technology at Canfor’s Prince George facility.

Canfor Pulp has been awarded a $13-million (CAD) cleantech project grant by Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC).

The $13-million non-repayable contribution through SDTC will enable the joint venture to further develop and demonstrate Licella’s Cat-HTR technology at commercial scale for the pulp and paper industry.

Licella was a consortium member in the successful application and these funds will be applied to the first joint venture project with Licella at the Canfor Pulp Prince George facility.

SDTC provides valuable business development and financial support to cleantech projects via its grants program and industry network. SDTC awarded the grant following an extensive due diligence process, involving both consortium members.

The joint venture with Canfor Pulp was formed to commercialise Licella’s patented Cat-HTR hydrothermal upgrading process for the pulp and paper industry. The project continues to progress well, working towards fully integrating Licella’s Cat-HTR platform into Canfor Pulp’s Prince George mill. The mill’s transformation to biorefinery will allow Canfor Pulp to economically and rapidly convert its residue streams into a stable biocrude, to produce second generation biofuels and valuable biochemicals for the lucrative North American market.

Upon successful integration, the joint venture will look towards offering the Cat-HTR solution to the many Kraft and mechanical pulp mills globally.
